TOEFL Speaking 19

19. Talk about a difficulty you have overcome in your life. Describe the experience and say why it was difficult to overcome.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
During my schooling I was very weak at Drawing and Mathematics. Because of this I gave up after Matriculation and could not go for Engineering or Medical career. Nevertheless I was keen for Engineering so I passed my Electrician’s and Electrical Supervisor’s certificate courses administered by the Government of Rajasthan and took up the jobs. While I was working, I saw one of my colleagues pursuing for his Part-time Diploma in Electrical Engineering. This motivated me to join this course. I started studying for my Diploma in Electrical Engineering. I was regularly attending evening classes after my day’s job. This was all very tiring; above all the duration was four years. However every semester up to third year I cleared. In the Fourth and Final Year both semesters I studied very hard. I use to solve ten sets of past examinations daily. In a way preparation became so good that I could write the Final Year Examinations easily. I passed the examination with First Class and First Rank. I scored the highest marks in the batch and experienced a success. Although it was very difficult to attend classes daily after the day’s job and also to cope with subjects of Engineering Drawing and Mathematics and pass this course which I overcame with my strong will and hard work.
Essay on Save the Baby Girl
Essay on Baby Girl.
These days gender imbalance is becoming a grave problem especially in India. Girls are either aborted from mother’s womb or killed after birth. This gives rise to crimes like rape and killing. Write an essay emphasizing importance of women in the society.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
In ancient time birth of a girl child was considered as auspicious. As per an Indian proverb, “A home without a daughter is like a body without soul”. The birth of a daughter in the house was compared with the advent of Goddess Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth and Goddess Saraswati, the Goddess of Knowledge and Wisdom. No ceremony was considered to be complete in absence of women. The belief was that “No home is complete without a woman.”
Indian is a “Male Dominated Society” hence women are the receiving end. They are always will treated and ill-treated at every step. As a matter of fact, a girl child is under constant, vigil initially by the parents, then her husband and finally her own children. She is never allowed to dwell and survive freely. Worst of all she is often killed before being born while in mother’s womb itself. This is foetus killing or infanticide. This is the gross downfall of humanity, morality and the values.
The situation has drastically worsened these days. Women suffer badly, infanticide have become widespread. Parents don’t send daughters for schooling thinking that the daughter is going to be a kitchen confined housewife. There was, hence, decline in female literacy and her position in the society. This practice is lasting till today and the killing of foetus after the sex determination is fearlessly continued.
The crime of female foetus aborting is widespread not only in rural areas but in urban areas too.  With the help of new techniques it has become possible to determine the sex of the unborn baby or the foetus, and if it is found to be a girl child than, this is followed by abortion. Clinics offering such service have come up all over the country. For the doctors with sex identification equipments the said illegal business is booming beyond imagination. Although there are severing laws against the misuse of parental diagnostic techniques, those are meant only for detecting abnormalities in the unborn infant and associated risks to the pregnant mother if any. The doctors, however, violate this law. Not a single case has been field so far under the law, which forbids such an unethical practice.
Dowry is another big evil in some northern states of India. Father of the girl has to give lot of cash and gold to the bridegroom. This may be given either during the wedding or after the marriage ceremony. In case the father of the bride fails to spare the said valuables on account of his poor economic health, the bride (the daughter) is severely tortured or she may even be torched to death.  Today, the said problem is quite widespread in the northern states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
Upon attaining puberty, a girl is considered to be a security risk, a likely source of trouble for the family’s honour and reputation. Then there are economic reasons for her killing. She is a liability for her parents from the cradle ceremony to the marriage. There has been not let up in the dowry system, which breaks the back of the parents. She is got rid of in order to save the family properly from partition. In some communities there is a dirty superstition that is a daughter is killed, the next child will be a son. In China also, the eldest male child inherits the property look upon the male child as their protector and supporter in old age. This gender-bias leads to the killing of girl child.
At least, I cannot imagine my existence in this world had there been no girl. I would not have come to this beautiful world and enjoyed my life had there been no girl. I am born because of a woman. I am married to a woman. The woman is my mother, my sister and my wife.
The human society is like a cart. The God has created man and woman as the two wheels of this society cart. Those two wheels are made for each other. For the human race to exist and survive, both of the wheels must be functional else the society collapses.
In nutshell all must be kind to women with high degree of love and respect to them. There is no life without a wife and there can’t be a wife in absence of girl. Considering all the facts above, save the girl child in the interest of humanity. Saving baby girls shall minimise crime and build a powerful nation.
Museums and Galleries – Essay;
The government spends about £220 million a year supporting museums and galleries in the UK, and a similar amount subsiding the visual and performing arts. This is a huge sum to spend on minority interests, and the money would be better spent on more important things. It should be up to the people who enjoy cultural attractions to pay for them.
What are your views? (Write minimum 250 Words)
=-=-=-=-=-
I feel government must spend required amount of money on preservation and upkeep of Museums and Galleries. I disagree to the statement that the said huge sum is spent on minority interests.
In this essay we shall look at the reasons justifying this view point.
A museum is an institution that cares for a collection of artefacts and other objects of scientific, artistic, cultural, or historical importance and makes them available for public viewing through exhibits that may be permanent or temporary. Most large museums are located in major cities throughout the world and some more exist in smaller cities, towns and even the countryside.
Secondly, history is the study of the past, focused on human activity and leading up to the present day. More precisely, history is the continuous, systematic narration of past events with extensive research work into it. The Museums and Galleries tell us about the past and History and are the most important and valid source for the study and research work on the subject of history for historians; those who study it as a profession.
Museums and Galleries attract tourists from various countries and thereby importance of that place increases. It also earns and boosts the revenue to the government through department of tourism this strengthens economy of the nation.
It has been very validly explained in a quotation by David C. McCullough; that “History is a guide to navigation in perilous times. History is who we are and why we are the way we are”.
In nutshell the Governments must spend necessary funds to preserve Museums and Galleries in the best possible manner.
Internet Communication versus Human Touch
According to recent study, the more time people use the Internet, the less time they spend with real human beings. Should we worry about the effect this is having on social interaction or should we see the Internet as a way opening up new communication possibilities worldwide?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge. (You should write at least 250 words)
=-=-=-=-
I strongly view the Internet as a means of opening up new communication possibilities worldwide. In this essay I shall elaborately explain my view point.
Internet is a type of Media. It is a means of unit as well as mass communication. It is a mode of information and entertainment too. Other types of media are broadly, News Papers, Magazines, Radio and Television. Internet, News Papers and TV are the most popular media these days. TV had replaced Radio & listening to radio has become obsolete now.
In the recent days, Internet has gained maximum popularity. This is capable of giving information on any subject, product, and service, utility including past history and news.
Because of wide spread computerization these days, this has become popular. Especially students and younger generation use it the most.
Majority of population use Internet for news and entertainment. One gets latest information and can keep pace with the time. Needless to say “Information Is Power”.
Internet also helps promoting business through advertisements of variety of latest products & services. Besides there are many exclusive business portals on websites that give minute-by-minute information on Stock Markets & the Business World.
Educational, Training and Developmental programs are also available on websites. These are pretty beneficial for the community and especially students. In addition many awareness programs on Health & Environment play very important role in our lives.
Indeed in the Internet communication, personal touch has reduced to a very great extent. However taking into account the advantages and disadvantages of internet, the advantages are many and disadvantages are very few.
In summary, the Internet is a means of opening up new communication possibilities worldwide.
Pollution Free Vehicles
With the rise in population, number of automobile vehicles has increased considerably. In India particularly, the population count is highly alarming at 1.22 Billion. (122 Crore). The life has become very fast and vehicle is a dire necessity for all of us. None can imagine a life without a vehicle.
The main Prime mover in vehicles is the petroleum products like Petrol and Diesel. The motor vehicles work on the principle of Internal Combustion. Hence the exhaust emits gases like carbon-di-oxide and carbon mono oxide. Carbon Mono Oxide is a poisonous gas that is injurious to human and animal health. Excessive vehicles will discharge excessive polluting gases in the air thereby causing environmental pollution. At the same time the enormously hot engines of automobiles emit heat in the air thereby adding up in Global Warming.
On the other hand, Oil prices keep on increasing day and on. Inflation is sky rocketing. Affordability becomes constraint with many automobiles owners. Hence they mix comparatively cheaper products like Kerosene with the petrol and run the automobiles either for winning bread or for business purpose. This gives out tremendous amount of very harmful smoke in the air. Also many two-wheeler owners, who have petro-oil engines, put excessive oil or other pollutants thereby spoiling the environment by way of severe pollution.
In order to control pollution we can adopt the following measures: -
1.    Minimise the use of vehicles.
2.    Switch off the engines while facing a red-light.
3.    Use only recommended fuel.
4.    Use only recommended lubricants in correct volumes.
5.    Check vehicle for PUC (Pollution under Control) at designated gas stations.
6.    Ensure regular periodic maintenance of vehicles.
7.    Ensure recommended tyre pressure.
8.    Vehicle pooling for common destination.
In recent past some companies have manufactured battery operated two wheelers. This operates for limited distances with limited load. If population with such needs use this type of vehicle shall be a great contribution toward reducing pollution and global warming.
Summing-up, Pollution Free Vehicle is the need of the hour in this environmental crisis.
What is your favourite way of getting around? Describe it and explain why it is your favourite means of transportation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My favourite way of getting around is my motorbike. I can use my motorbike for going to school or college, attending office or business, shopping or socializing and numerous daily activities. The life has become very fast and time is extremely scarce. We have to cope with the work and the business for which a motorbike is a great help. Motorbike is compact and less expensive because it consumes less gasoline (Petrol). It emits less exhaust gas and heat as compared to three and four wheelers. This helps in conservation of resources and protects environment from pollution and global warming. Hence motorbike is my favourite means of transportation.

Those who want to lose weight can opt for toned milk. In addition pulses are a part of my dinner and lunch that give plenty of proteins. Foods made from animal products are too high in fats and result into obesity and overweight hence I avoid it. Nevertheless for a change I do take non-vegetarian food. While I was working, I saw one of my colleagues pursuing for his Part-time Diploma in Electrical Engineering. This motivated me to join this course. I started studying for my Diploma in Electrical Engineering. I was regularly attending evening classes after my day’s job. This was all very tiring; above all the duration was four years. However every semester up to third year I cleared. In the Fourth and Final Year both semesters I studied very hard. I use to solve ten sets of past examinations daily. In a way preparation became so good that I could write the Final Year Examinations easily. I passed the examination with First Class and First Rank. I scored the highest marks in the batch and experienced a success. Although it was very difficult to attend classes daily after the day’s job and also to cope with subjects of Engineering Drawing and Mathematics and pass this course which I overcame with my strong will and hard work.

Think of a place that makes you feel relaxed and peaceful. Describe it and explain why it is relaxing and peaceful for you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I can think of a place that makes me feel fully relaxed and peaceful is my birth place, Bijainagar. This is a countryside village situated in Ajmer district in the state of Rajasthan India. The population of this place is below 200,000 only. There are not many industries, factories and automobiles; hence this place is totally pollution free. There is no noise here hence quite peaceful. Absolutely clean air to breathe. The people are very simple, sociable, and cooperative hence I enjoy an excellent company during my stay there. I am able to meet my school mates and cherish my good old day’s memories that are the great pleasure. Also the cost of living in hotels is far cheaper as compared to other big towns, cities and metros. Whenever I want to get away from the hectic schedule, relax and have some peaceful time, I prefer to go to Bijainagar and stay there for a week or two and enjoy.
TOEFL Speaking Practice Draft -17- Name a person whom you truly admire. Describe the person and say why you admire him/her.
Name a person whom you truly admire. Describe the person and say why you admire him/her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I am an admirer of noted film actor of India Mr., Amitabh Bachchan a legendary actor, and one of the most prominent figures in the Indian film industry. He received many major awards in his career, including three National Film Awards. He has also worked as a film producer and a television presenter. He at his height of 6 ft 2 inches (190cm) is one of the tallest actors in Indian Cinema.

He has numerous wonderful qualities. Firstly he leads a highly disciplined life and his self confidence is sky rocketing. He has never been late on any shooting rather he has always been ahead of schedule because of his wonderful time management quality. Instances are there when he had fever as high as 104 degrees F, yet he continued working those qualities are highly commendable. Though Amitabh suffers from Asthma, he never ever allowed this sickness to come in his way to perform and achieve goals. He is now 70 and he still continues to work with very high enthusiasm; zeal and efficiency. His effectiveness gets richer day by day.

TOEFL Speaking Practice Draft -16- What is your favourite style of clothing? Describe it and explain why it is your favourite.

What is your favourite style of clothing? Describe it and explain why it is your favourite.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My favourite style of clothing is absolutely formal. Say pant, shirt, tie, suspenders, socks and shoes. I am very particular about my dress. I always wear sober and light colours in complete matching. I don’t like bright and deep colours in contrast. I don’t prefer heavy prints also. Dress has a direct impact on an individual’s moods, personality and behaviour. With the kind of dress I wear, I have experienced a good success in interviews of all types and successfully negotiating with top brass people. A well dressed person gives a powerful first impression that is paramount importance. First impression is a lasting impression. With a powerful first impression an individual wins more than half the battle. In a big organization if CEO is not appropriately dressed he or she may be mistook as a shop floor worker by the visitors. At the same time one may not get due respect from the regular employees too. In a nutshell I prefer to always dress well and achieve great success.
I had been to Ooty in the state of Tamil-Nadu in India. This is a hill station in The Nilgiris District and this is a great tourist attraction. This is the right spot for a nature lover. It sparkles with lush green vegetation that adds to the beauty of this spot and this is popularly known as “The Queen of Hill Stations”. The height of the hills in the Nilgiri range varies between 2280 and 2290 meters. I was flabbergasted to see the multitudes of greenery and variety colourful flowers blossoming all over. The lofty mountains, dense, forest and very vast Tea Estates are marvellous. It is lush green all over so cool to watch. I also visited botanical gardens, and fabulous rose gardens just superb. I also enjoyed boating in the Ooty Lake. I stayed here for a week relaxed and enjoyed a lot. The weathers are very pleasant through-out the year; the temperatures are 17 to 20 degrees Celsius in summer and 5 to 13 degrees Celsius in winters. Hence I find this place to be ideal for vacation.
TOEFL Speaking Practice - 13 - Who is an important person in your country? Describe this person and explain why he/she is important.
I strongly feel that Mr. Anna Hazare from Ralegan Siddhi, Maharashtra India is the most important person for India. Because very few social activists have captured the attention of Indians across the globe as Anna Hazare did during his "fast unto death" over the issue of the Lokpal Bill in New Delhi in April 2011. Hazare, a Gandhian by belief, outlook and practice, has become the face of India's fight against corruption. During his fast over the Lokpal Bill, Hazare, managed to inspire and mobilize the support of even the ultra-modern Indians. The "Anna Hazare fast" can be described as the first real "social networking movement" in India. Hazare, a former Army man, began his social activism from Ralegan Siddhi, village itself where he successfully led a movement against alcoholism and made Ralegan Siddhi a "model village". Hazare's campaign was instrumental in the implementation of the Right to Information Act in Maharashtra, which is considered one of the best RTI Acts in India. A Ramon Magsaysay award winner, Anna Hazare, like his idol, Mahatma Gandhi, has triggered a debate over the use of fast as a means of protest in India. By sheer commitment and simplicity, he has demonstrated that Gandhian principles are relevant even in the 21st-century India.
TOEFL Speaking Practice-11 - Talk about an experience in your life that made you feel embarrassed. Describe it and say why it was embarrassing.
I was working in construction of a giant Oil Refinery. One Mr. Desai was my colleague. We were living in the same street but had not visited houses of each other for socializing. Mr. Desai and I had been pressing each other for home visits. One fine evening I made-up my mind and visited Mr. Desai’s house. I was very warmly welcomed and received a nice hospitality. He introduced me to his Father and Brother. I was not introduced to one female sitting in corner of the room. However I was amidst them for an hour. The curiosity to know about that female member was mounting higher and higher. At the end when I was to depart, Mr. Desai came downstairs to see me off. During this I asked Desai “If the female sitting in corner was his mother?” Desai replied “Mr. Joshi! She is my younger sister and she is mentally retarded”. I felt so embarrassed I can’t express in words. I apologized. The main cause of this embarrassment was my judgemental type of a question. Since then I learnt a lesson never to put judgemental type of questions.
