The impacts of using these sites have both positive and negative effects on the youth.
The positive aspect of social media is that it plays a vital role in teenagers’ lives. Most youths are spending good lot of time in these sites. The popular social media sites are Facebook, Twitter and Orkut etc. Social media helps the user updated with the current affairs around the world, help the teenagers stay connected and interact with each other even if they are several miles away. This strengthens their relationship even if they finished school and moved to different locations they stay connected and update one another.
Over and above, social media sites provide a platform whereby the youth can create groups and pages depending upon their common interest and discipline and they build connections and opportunities for their careers by updating various topics for discussion. Younger generation say that social media is a part of their life and it makes the life easier and efficient.
One of the negative effects of social networking is the poor spelling and grammar among language learners. While social network sites bring people together and stay connected, conversely it creates social isolation too. Secondly the youth lands into addiction and tend to spend many hours on these sites and they hardly have face-to-face interaction. According scientists’ social isolation can lead to a host of emotional, psychological, physical and mental problems which include anxiety, depression and somatic complaints among many others.
Worst of all, visiting pornographic and adult content sites by younger generation has an adverse effect on their minds and mental health. Secondly vulgar chat has become an addiction among younger generation. This is a parasite that eats away entire precious time of students and they don’t study and thereby spoil their careers.
In conclusion, the usefulness of media is much more as compared to a few of its ill effects. Hence social media can not be condemned. However in light of this, parents must exercise strict supervision and control on Internet surfing by youngsters to prevent them from visiting ugly sites or indulging into vulgar chat.
