21st
Century Skills can be defined as the core competencies like Collaboration,
Creativity, Productivity, Communication, Information Literacy and Cross-Cultural
Communication with Global Awareness. It is the need of the hour for the people
to learn and acquire those skills to cope with the changes in technology and
knowledge society.
Computer is a
relatively new invention. Computers were invented about fifty years ago.
However they came in extensive use some thirty years back. Personal Computers
were put in use some times in the year 1980. Since then innovation in computerization
developed leaps and bound thereby made tremendous positive impact on our lives.
Now life without computers can’t be imagined.
Computerization
means Virtualization. A virtualised computer server can boost processing power
and reduce costs. To store, access or carryout online or by means of a computer
is to computerize or digitize. Digitization means Converting Data and
Information into Electronic Form. Digitization or Virtualization renders
Locations and physical presence irrelevant.
Students in
the 21st century now learn globally and not in a congested classroom. Learners
now gather the information and knowledge by accessing the Internet through computers,
smart phones or via social networking site. Now various “Distant Learning Mode”
are available and students can learn through them and acquire those skills.
Majority people
move with tablet computers and Smart Cell Phones with internet in their pocket
now. All businesses like Buying, Selling, Marketing, and Banking. Last but not
least Education, Examinations and Qualifying have been virtualized and
computers have been introduced in most of the schools and colleges.
In conclusion,
besides the above mentioned skills, Adaptability, communication skills, problem
solving, self-management, and systems-thinking are equally important and essential
skills for the 21st-century population.
