Rules for Making Plural of Nouns
The plural of most of the nouns is formed simply by suffixing s at the end of the nouns. E.g. Boy----boys/ Girl ---- girls / Toy ---- toys / Book ---- books / Dog ---- dogs etc.
But the nouns ending with s, sh, ch or x, plural is formed by suffixing -- es.E.g. class ---- classes, kiss ---- kisses, dish ---- dishes, brush ---- brushes, match ---- matches watch ---- watches, box ---- boxes etc
For nouns ending with o , plural is formed by adding -- es
e.g. mango---mangoes, hero---heroes, tomato--tomatoes, potatoes etc
Nouns ending in f, or fe form their plural by replacing f or fe by v and adding es, e.g., Thief -- Thieves, half,-- halves, shelf -- shelves, wife -- wives, knife -- knives, calf -- calves, wolf -- wolves, self -- selves, leaf -- leaves etc.
The nouns dwarf, hoof, scarf and wharf can take s or es in their plural.e.g. dwarfs -- dwarves, wharfs -- wharves, hoofs -- hooves, scarfs -- scarves.
Other words ending in f or fe add s
gulf -- gulfs, safe -- safes, cliff -- cliffs, proof -- proofs, handkerchief -- handkerchiefs
A few nouns form plural by changing inside vowel of the singular. E.g. Man -- men, woman -- women, foot -- feet, tooth -- teeth, mouse -- mice.
Some plural are formed simply by suffixing en or ren to the noun. E.g. ox -- oxen, child -- children
Some nouns have singular & plural alike E.g.:
swine / sheep / deer / aircraft / spacecraft / series / species / pair
dozen / gross / score / hundred / thousand.
Some nouns are used only in plural. E.g.. Bellows / scissors / tongs / pincers / spectacles.
