Bovine is the category of animal that is most important in India. Bovine includes cattle, cow, ox, buffalo etc. Reasons for their importance are elaborated in following paragraphs.

Animals were used to help mankind do work long before we had machines. Without these animals perhaps civilizations would not rise. Animals help the people in India for transportation of heavy goods across the deserts. Animals give food, meat and milk, etc; besides animal skins and fur were used for clothing. In the absence of those animals perhaps the civilization of India could not have risen.

The cow is considered to be a most sacred, holy and well respected animal in India even today. Since ages mankind consumes cow-milk as a food. Long ago in India's early history the cow provided food for the family and was a symbol of wealth. Oxen are employed for transportation; pulling carts and cultivating the fields for raising crops and allied agricultural purposes. Even today the Hindu religion especially protects the sacred cow. No Hindu would ever eat cow meat; on the contrary Hindus would support the need to carefully protect them as important symbols in Indian society.

In some parts of India like Rajasthan and Kutch there are large desserts. The inhabitants there employ camels for transportation of men and materials. Elephants were born in the wild, but sometimes men caught and tamed them. These elephants pulled trees for building houses, carried heavy loads.

Summarizing, the cow is considered most sacred and important animal in India. Its protection is a paramount theme. Most Hindus respect the cow as a motherly figure for her gentle qualities and providing nurturing milk and its products for a largely vegetarian diet. It holds an honored place in society.
