To a very great extent though unintentionally, the earth is being harmed by human activity. However conscious efforts of mankind can greatly limit such damage if not prevent it.

The single biggest human activity is increasing the population. The basic human needs for fresh water, food, housing and fuel are making unprecedented demands on our global and local ecosystems. Further than the necessities of survival, there is increasing demand throughout the globe for more material goods and services. As the nations strive to increase material wealth and the comforts and conveniences, the pressure on biodiversity and natural resources will only increase. Over population calls for enormous housing constructions this causes trees falling and jungle cutting thereby causing imbalance of ecology. In addition, more vehicles are needed that cause environment pollution by way of carbon mono oxide and carbon-dioxide.

Heat generation add to global warming. Global warming represents a profound and emerging threat to biodiversity around the world. As temperatures rise, many habitats for plants and animals will change sometimes depriving them of the homes and niches. For example, monarch butterflies could lose their wintering habitats in the mountains of Mexico, and polar bears could be affected by the loss of marine life. Many species will not be able to migrate fast enough to keep up with shifting habitat ranges. As a result, many species will become extinct, and ecosystems around the world will become even more fragile.

Massive industrialization causes tremendous amount of gases in the atmosphere that has caused depletion in ozone layer resulting into shortage of Oxygen. Many other liquids discharged in form of effluents contaminate the earth thereby most fertile land turns into barren.

In conclusion though inadvertently, human activity affects the earth adversely.
