“Never Judge a Person by External Appearances”

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? One should never judge a person by external appearances. Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.
--------------------------------------

I agree that one should never judge a person based on his or her appearance only. Nevertheless whenever we meet an unknown person, our first judgment – unwillingly and often subconsciously – starts from his or her external appearance. Almost every aspect of it can be regarded as some kind of clue: for instance, clothing and hairstyle tell something about social status and personal fashion, facial expression and gestures indicate the emotional state of mind.

Yet all those features are superficial and changeable, and therefore we should not make any judgment about the inner nature and character of a person by which his or her personality and identity are defined. Since character shows itself only in words and deeds, it would need a long-term observation for a right judgment. Hence it is better not to take judgment of a person merely on his or her external appearance.

I would mention my own case for further clarity on the subject matter. I know a lady wife of a big doctor in my company. I visited doctor’s house for greeting them on New Year’s Day. I greeted the family; doctor met me warmly, waived his hand, greeted me and shook hand with me. The lady simply nodded her head downwards. The first impression obviously would be that she is an egoistic and proud lady and that’s what I too thought. Later on I came to know that she suffered extensive fire burns in the past and movements of her hands were restricted.

In conclusion we must not judge the person in totality simply on his or her appearance.
