If I could travel back in time to meet a famous person from history, I would like to meet Late Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. I am a great admirer and fan of him because of the immense tolerance that he possessed against all odds of life.

Vallabhbhai Patel (31 October 1875 – 15 December 1950) was a political and social leader of India who played a major role in the country's struggle for independence and guided its integration into a united, independent nation. In India and across the world, he was often addressed as “Sardar” which means Chief in many languages of India.

A popular anecdote of his school days recounts how he lanced his own painful boil in the armpit without hesitation, even as the barber (quack in the village) supposed to do it trembled. This shows how tolerant he was against any odds.

Furthermore, in 1909, Patel's wife Jhaverba was hospitalised in Mumbai erstwhile Bombay, to undergo a major surgical operation for cancer. Her health suddenly worsened and despite successful emergency surgery, she died in the hospital. Patel was given a note informing him of his wife's demise. As he was cross-examining a witness in court, he read the note and pocketed it and continued to intensely cross-examine the witness and finally won the case. He broke down to the news to others only after the proceedings had ended. Patel himself decided not to remarry. He raised his children with the help of his family and sent them to English-medium schools in Mumbai.

Summarizing, the above incidences are indicative of the immense bravery and toughness of Mr. Patel against the odds of life. Mr. Patel is well-known as an “Iron-man”. Hence is my desire to meet this famous person from history.
