A good supervisor should know the job well. If one knows the job well he or she can train subordinates for the job. But if a supervisor lacks job knowledge, the workers would soon make out this weakness and resort to insubordination that spoils the discipline and work culture. A good supervisor must ensure that workers enjoy doing their job and feel happy about it because an unhappy worker can not deliver goods. A supervisor must ensure that workers perform at an optimum level of their efficiency and give maximum quality output. A good supervisor must have leadership qualities. One must possess a good personality and must be able to set forth good examples to the workmen. One must help the new entrants learn the job and perform. The quality of good supervisor is his or her friendly attitude towards subordinates.

A supervisor must be able to create good bond among workers and develop an ideal cooperative work environment. Cooperation is a paramount importance in running the business smoothly and effectively. In absence of cooperation targeted output is impossible to achieve. A supervisor must be a good listener and effective communicator. One must be able to listen and appreciate workers difficulties. Should such difficulties be genuine, he or she must take suitable action to remove those difficulties. Besides, a supervisor with good sense of humor may become very dear of his or her subordinates. Excessive strictness may create distances between workmen and management and harmonious human relations can not be maintained which are important for productivity and profitability.

To summarize, a good boss must be visionary and foresighted with good human relation management capability and he or she must be diplomatic in using the words “Why” and “No” without hurting the worker.
