Essay – Should the government place a tax on junk food and fatty snacks?

Essay: - Should the government place a tax on junk food and fatty snacks?
---------------------------
I very strongly feel that government must place high tax on junk food and fatty snacks. In this essay I shall elaborate my view point.

It is well known that junk food and fatty snacks are not good for human health. Those foods in short term cause problems like indigestion, belching, gastric, and bloating of stomach and many more. In the longer run, Fatty snacks give rise to high cholesterol, abnormal weight gain and obesity. High Cholesterol, Obesity and Heavy body weight result into heart problems and heart failures.  Those foods are very popular among students and the younger generation. For young parents with their kids, eating those foods in the food stands and fast food stalls has become a fashion and a status symbol. In this fast age of computerization people don’t prefer to make food at home but consume junk food popularly called Fast Food.

It is a proven fact that smoking and drinking alcohol are injurious to the health and can cause deadly diseases like Cancer and Cirrhosis of liver. These products are highly taxed. High taxation on these products makes the affordability difficult resulting into low consumption rate. General motivation to consume these products is low and this is in the interest of good health of the population.

Identically, junk food and fatty snacks must also be heavily taxed so that the affordability of these foods becomes difficult resulting into lower consumption. This will be largely in the interest of good health of the population by large.

In summary, Government must highly tax these foods in the interest of the good health of the population. It would not be out of place to mention here that “Healthy population builds a healthy nation”

Computers in Modern Education - Sample Essay for IELTS and TOEFL

Computers are essential feature of modern education. Some believe that certain subjects such as mathematics are better taught using computers. Others however think that there are aspects of education in which computer use is inadequate.
Discuss both these views and give your opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your experience.
----------------

I fully agree that computers are one of the most essential features in modern education. Mathematics can surely be better taught by computers because of various functions like formulas, auto sum and many more.

In
early days calculations were performed manually in which chances of human error are high. Thereafter Logarithmic Tables were introduced. No doubt Log table calculations were relatively faster than manual however chances of human error can’t be ruled out.  After Log Tables, came the slide-rules in the subject of math. After the slide-rules came the electronic calculators.   In slide-rules and calculators the calculations used to be very fast and chances of human error were less. Finally now computers have been introduced in the education. Subject of Mathematics is best taught with the help of computers. However with the help of computers, descriptive subjects like History, Geography, Civics, Social Studies, can also be well taught as it is capable of giving past and history and present developments.

Students come across computers both at home and at school. Governments worldwide have introduced computers and internet connections in classrooms. Most people welcome computers that have improved the ways we work and we play. Technology is advancing at a speed that is far beyond our imagination. Now computers are an essential feature not only in education alone but in our daily lives too.

No doubt use of computers involves initial computer literacy that is not very difficult to pick-up. Also Learning and teaching is a human process involving human touch and communication and in this process, emotions play a vital role in a student’s learning and motivating process and these are absent in a computer. Computer although may be inadequate on emotional aspect but it is the best companion.

In conclusion I fully agree that computers are one of the most essential features in modern education.

“An Important Change in Hometown”

If you could change one important thing about your hometown, what would you change? Use reasons and specific examples to support your answer.
======================================================
If I could change one important thing in my home town, I would change it by doing something concrete to stop the violence. In the following paragraphs of this essay, I shall elaborate my viewpoint.

The violence is the biggest enemy of the mankind and it is destroying not only my hometown but the world rather. I would like to have a better and peaceful place to live. I wish everybody would help each other and would not fight or kill fellowmen. I wish I could replace the narcotic drugs, tobacco products and alcohol with food, milk and water because innumerable children are hungry and they die of starvation and thirst every day. I would love to help the homeless because they don't have any food, water and shelter or any place to live. If the people by large, stop smoking and/or consuming other tobacco products, they can live a disease free and better life. Smoking and consumption of other tobacco products cause “Cancer” and “Oral Fibrosis” which are dreadful and life taking. I wish the children could go to schools, and have proper education, in turn they would listen to their parents and their teachers and respect them so they can have the best education and information of what is the best for everybody. I wish I could stop the communal riots, arson and ransacking. I wish my hometown to be a peaceful place to live, free from wars, riots or massacres.

In conclusion, if I could change one important thing in my home town, I would change it by doing something concrete to stop the violence so that my hometown becomes an ideal place to live with peace and harmony. (282 Words)

“Age for Starting Schooling”

Some people think that children should begin their formal education at a very early age and should spend most of their time on school studies. Others believe that young children should spend most of their time playing. Compare these two views. Which view do you agree with and why?
======================================================
I very strongly opine that children under the age of 4 years must spend most of their time playing rather than going to schools.

Generally School starting and leaving ages are set by law after a great deal of detailed study and research work. A child is required to attend school from the age of five to the age of 16. However most children start school in Kindergarten before they are five; say between 4 and 5 years of age. The current minimum age for leaving school is 16 years by the time they complete their high school or Matriculation examination and secure college admission. Truly speaking age of the children earlier than four is the age for play, eat and sleep and enjoy.

Of late parents have turned over enthusiastic about their kids becoming peak performers too soon. As a result they start sending their children to private schools etc too early even before they complete 3 years of age that is very harmful. By doing so children are deprived of their genuine privileges of playing and merrymaking. Rather children are forced to follow a fixed schedule, of attending school and doing home work when they should rightly play and enjoy. In the process, children too early start comparing themselves with the other children and develop an inferior feeling when they fail to perform as good as other children. This is detrimental to their mental as well as physical health.

In nutshell, children must be allowed to grow-up in the natural way. They must be allowed to play till they complete four years and then only they should be sent to school. (---273 Words)

“Advertising Tells About Country” ---

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Advertising can tell you a lot about a country. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
====================================
I agree advertising can tell us a lot about the country. Advertising is just like a mirror that reflects detailed information of the host country in which it exists.

For example in Singapore, feature films in a cinema are supported by a “first half” consisting entirely of commercials. People hurry-up into the cinema so as not to miss any, and are excited when a new one appears. The ads are part of the program, a capitalist’s dream. Although both countries show a significant tendency to use more symbolic values than product attribute values in retail advertising. Moreover, the value “individualism” is used more often in television commercials shown in Singapore than in Malaysia. This is likely due to the fact that Malaysia is still hesitant to promote values that are perceived to run counter to established conventions. As for Singapore, the government has been relatively neutral in advertising content as long as religion, language and race are not exploited. Most commercials therefore tend to portray materialistic pursuit. Television commercials shown in Malaysia do not carry the value “sex” and “work”, whereas those shown in Singapore do not portray the value “leisure”.

For example, Japanese advertising is totally different of that of in Europe. Japanese television advertising is dominated by 15–second spots; therefore long narrative stories are not commonplace. In fact, most commercials opt to tell short stories or represent brief scenes. Japanese commercials do not seek to tie up all loose ends, in the same way that most western commercials do. Whereas Western advertising seeks to be much more comprehensive, tying up the creative idea, product story and narrative.

Summarizing, advertising tells lot about the host country. --(278 Words)

“Advertising of New Products”---

Some people say that advertising encourages us to buy things we really do not need. Others say that advertisements tell us about new products that may improve our lives. Which viewpoint do you agree with? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
====================================================
I agree to the latter view point that advertisements tell us about the new products available that may improve our lives.

Advertising is a means of communication to masses about the products that are available in the markets. Depending upon the individual need, one can buy and make use of those. Before a decade Personal Computers, were advertised comprising of Central Processing Unit, and Monitor to be put on working desk. Those were popularly knows as Desk-Tops. Now personal computers are advertised as small, compact, mobile, light weight, Note Pads those are known as Lap-Tops can be carried any where and operated by putting on our lap. Now introduction of laptops in the offices has made a great saving of space, more people can work in the same area, and because of the improved features of the Laptops as compared to old model PC’s, work efficiency of the people has increased. They give more output with less effort of the person working.

Advertising is a powerful tool in the Business. Several Industrial Trade Fairs, IT Fares, Health and Fitness Fare, Educational Fare, Automobiles Fare, Fashion Fare etc are organized and conducted periodically. The basic idea behind these fares is to communicate masses about availability of the newer products, their new features etc. This facilitates customers to buy the products as per their respective needs.

It is absolutely wrong to say that advertisements motivate us to buy things that we do not need. After-all buying is one’s mature decision; buying any unwanted thing is sheer childish

In a nutshell advertising is a powerful means of mass communication and that keeps the population well informed about the latest product available which can be bought by individuals if they need. (287 Words)

“Advertising Is All Around us”---

Advertising is all around us it is an unavoidable part of everyone’s life. Some people say advertising is a positive part of our lives while others say it is negative. Discuss both the views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. You must write at least 250 words.
==================================================
Advertising is an integral and a vital aspect of business sector. Advertisements are the means to communicate to masses by large, about the latest products and services available. Advertisements are the information and help to masses. Advertisements promote and enhance business and thereby economy of the nation.

However some advertisements of sleek undergarments of ladies are made highly sexy in appearance. Those advertisements are displayed in the form of huge hoardings by side of roads and on freeways. Those divert attention of drivers and result into road mishaps. Secondly those advertisements while aired on television are seen by children and those have negative and undesirable impact on the tender minds.

Some advertisements of Alcoholic beverages, Cigarette, Cigars and Tobacco products (popularly known as GUTKHA in India) are the most detrimental. By seeing these, viewers regardless of their age are tempted to use them and they finally fall into the trap of addiction and ruin their health.

Many advertisements of soft drinks like Coke, Pepsi etc are aired on TV with great exaggeration. Showing the consumer burning his clothes in flames and jumping from a tall building top and yet safely landing on the ground without even getting a bruise. This is absolutely unnatural and trick photography. This had bad effect on the minds of younger generation. In many cases, boys in the process of imitating the said advertisement set their clothes on fire and jumped down to the ground and all of them died. This is most pathetic.

In conclusion while advertising is an essential tool for enhancement of businesses, care must be exercised not to generate misleading advertisements or very sexy advertisements that can prove injurious. (277 Words)
